LACKLUSTER APPROACH TO A DEEPLY UNSETTLING STORY
I am a big fan of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and I make the train trip to Montreal at least twice a year and see many things there. This was was my first great disappointment with a ballet for this company. I am not faulting the dancers or the sense of the production, but the choreographic approach to the material was hesitant and bland, and didn't deal with the true darkness of the material in the novel-although it tried to do far too much of a "Book Report" and far too little exploration of the inherent themes. I came home and watched Kenneth MacMillan's ballet of MAYERLING and was struck with his ability to confront the issues raised with a much darker story and real history...I was hoping that a dance exploration of this material would yield at least a significant pas de deux for the wife and game keeper, but the ballet bogs down in what we should always remember Balanchine and Agnes DeMille stating..."There are no mothers-in-law in ballet"- don't stifle the dance with detail.
