Opera De Montreal presents an entirely new production of Camille Sant-Saens' grand opera, the vengeful Samson and Delilah, based on the eponymous tale in the Old Testament. Widely regarded as the defining work in French opera, a far cry from it's premiere in 1877, it had to open in Weimar, Germany, as the subject matter was though too shocking!
The story of the Hebrew strongman, Samson and his attempts to lead a revolt against the oppressive Philistines, and Delilah, the vexed priestess who will stop at nothing to distract him. Seduction, scandal and devious cunning are her tools as she tries to undo the secret to his power. Proving to be weaker in heart than physical strength, he falls for her trickery, putting the uprising in severe jeopardy...
